What is Shamonda?

Shamonda virus (SHAV) is a Simbu-group orthobunyavirus, first isolated from cattle in Nigeria in 1965. Spread between animals by biting midges (Culicoides). Close cousin of Schmallenberg.

June 2026: dairy herds in eastern France show fever, diarrhoea, collapsing milk yield. Late July: virus identified. Then Germany, Switzerland, and 10 more.

22 Oct 2026: first human infection ever reported. The patient died in early October. Whether SHAV caused the death is under investigation.
